MISHAWAKA — The businesswoman who was the brains behind Aunt Beth’s Cookies is no longer at the helm of the bakery, but its new owner will continue using her time-honored recipes.
Beth and Ted Modlin, who opened Aunt Beth’s Cookies in 1988, sold the Clover Road bakery last month to Phil Wenzel, who will serve as president and executive pastry chef. The 34-year-old, of South Bend, bought the business with his father-in-law, Michael Violi Sr., owner of Elkhart-based Midway Specialty Vehicles.
Aunt Beth’s, staffed by four employees, sells cookies and muffins to about 50 food distributors across Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and the Chicago area. Distributors sell the baked goods to convenience stores, restaurants and other businesses.
