TRAVERSE CITY — Bill Koucky keeps busy. His business, GT Culinary Oils, sold its first bottle in December and started cranking out quantity sales in early summer. Koucky set up a second business, GT Culinary Flours, at the same time the first venture was ramping up.

“I have no idea what the flour (business) is going to do,” he said.

Koucky (pronounced koos-key) sees a bright future for his oil business. GT Culinary Oils’ sunflower and canola cooking oils now are on the shelves of more than 80 stores in Michigan and nearby states, including the recent addition of the Kroger chain. A bottle of the non-GMO unrefined oil retails for $15. GT Culinary Oils, in addition to retail sales, are used in Pleasanton and Old Mission breads.

Koucky and his four-person crew can produce about 1,000 bottles of oil per day. He hopes to eventually increase production to 100,000 gallons a year.
