The state yesterday awarded nearly $200,000 in workforce training grants to a Salem cookie maker and a Beverly insurance company.
"It's great news, particularly in this economy," said Nick Schulson, vice president of human resources at Electric Insurance Co. of Beverly.
"It will really help us to grow and add customers," said Marc Hazel, president of Jacqueline's Gourmet Cookies, a Salem manufacturer.
In all, the state announced more than $2 million in grants to 28 companies for training, job creation and retention. The funds are targeted at small and medium-sized businesses that would not be able to make the investments without state assistance, according to the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development.
The state expects to train nearly 3,000 workers and generate more than 200 jobs.
