The changes Martin's Food Market has made to the look of its stores and the products it carries are the talk at the dinner table, at restaurants, cocktail parties and after church throughout the Richmond area.
The grocer spent several million dollars per store on remodeling and upgrades after buying 25 Ukrop's Super Market stores a year ago Tuesday.
It went to great lengths to incorporate the Ukrop's tradition by adding the former grocer's name to signage, continuing to stock its prepared-food products and baked goods and keeping more than 3,000 employees.
Despite opening on Sundays, having longer hours and selling beer and wine, Martin's has labored to keep customers and attract new ones since May, when it added its style of retailing to the former Ukrop's stores, the chain's top executive and industry experts say.
