LEOMINSTER — Tony Aveni wants to bring back a slice of Leominster history.

He remembers, each Sunday, walking to the former Tony's Bakery on Sixth Street.

There, people from three downtown parishes would converge at the family-run bakery. The smell of freshly baked bread would hit them as soon as they stepped inside.

"They'd sell a ton of bread after church," he recalled.

Aveni said he is trying to recreate that scenario at Union Bread on Lancaster Street, which opened in August.

"Like the old days, that's kind of what I'm pushing … the old-school bakery shop," he said.
