TOWN OF ULSTER >> Robert and Lynn Allen recognized about five years ago that there was a lot of bread to be made at urban-based farmers’ markets.
Their hunch turned out to be right.
Ever since they ditched the retail end of their business in favor of direct sales at green markets, the demand for their oven-fresh breads, pies, rolls and cookies has soared.
Nowadays, their Meredith’s Country Bakery trucks—stacked daily with thousands of baked goods heading to green markets from Albany to Manhattan—return almost empty.
