Famed Parisian macaroon shop Maison Ladurée opened a Madison Avenue location in Manhattan on Tuesday morning. The patisserie was supposed to open Monday, but Hurricane Irene pushed to grand opening back one day.
Louis Ernest Ladurée opened the first Maison Ladurée bakery in 1962 at 16 rue Royal in Paris, where it still serves macaroons today. The shop has undergone many transformations, from a bakery to a pastry shop, countless redecorations, and from a high-society, "see-and-be-seen" café to a showcase for visitors from around the world.
Francis Holder and son David Holder of the Holder Group decided to buy to brand in 1993. They have since opened several more shops in France, plus new stores in Saudi Arabia, Italy, Japan and Monaco, among other locations around the world.
In addition to the rainbow-colored macaroons, the shop sells a collection of chocolates, ice cream macaroons, candies, teas, perfumed candles and fragrances, says the company's official website. Every item is packaged in their signature dainty boxes.
