Harvest Time Bread Co., a national baker for the grocery and food service industries, is closing its 71,000-square-foot manufacturing plant in Mount Airy and cutting 57 local employees.
The closure comes two years after the company invested $4.5 million to upgrade the facility located at the Piedmont Triad West Industrial Park and expand production. The state contributed $100,000 in grant money to assist in the expansion.
Todd Tucker, president of the Surry County Economic Development Partnership, said Harvest Time Bread decided to shut its doors amid declining sales and the loss of customers.
