A new German bread purveyor is rising on the Lower East Side. Landbrot, named for a traditional North German loaf, plans to open the first of two Manhattan locations at 185 Orchard St., between East Houston and Rivington streets. The company signed a 10-year deal for 800 square feet of ground floor space, and a 600-square-foot basement, at the address. Asking rent was $110 a square foot.
The café should open for business within three months, shortly before Landbrot’s larger flagship location at 137 Seventh Ave. debuts.
“They liked this space so much that they decided to open a satellite store even before they finished their flagship,” said Steve Rappaport, the Sinvin Real Estate broker who represented both Landbrot and landlord S&H Equities. “The Lower East Side has a great combination of all eastern European food,” he added, noting that the hipster vibe of the neighborhood was also appealing to Landbrot. The company expects to roll its concept out across the Northeast.
