Detroit City Council Approves Tax Breaks For Bakery Expansion

DETROIT, MI — City Council authorized a tax abatement that will help the popular Cass Corridor baker Avalon International Breads expand.

The bakery on 422 W. Willis Street plans to open a new production center with office and small retail space at 6555 East Forest Avenue.

The company will invest $1.2 million and hire 37 workers at the new location in addition to the 45 employees on Willis Street.

The tax abatement will save the business $268,000 over the next 12 years, while the city will gain an estimated $551,000 in new income and property taxes over the same period, city fiscal analysts told the council in a public hearing last week.
