DANVILLE — Katie Alin Taylor began spending lots of time in the kitchen tinkering with recipes after her mother was diagnosed with celiac disease.

"I watched her struggle," Taylor said. "She never had anything sweet to eat."

Elaine Taylor liked her daughter's gluten-free creations so much that she asked her to bake birthday cakes for celiac week at the Taylor Family Foundation's Camp Arroyo in Livermore, a facility for children with chronic illnesses and special needs.

"The kids were standing in their chairs, screaming, crying, excited," said Elaine Taylor, the foundation's president and co-founder. "I hate to say it was an 'ah-ha' moment, but it was one of those 'ah-ha' moments for Katie."
