Dan ‘Sourdough’ Wheldon Ready To Bake Bread In San Francisco
July 22, 2010 | 2 min to read
SONOMA, Calif. — Dan Wheldon, driver of the National Guard car on the IZOD IndyCar® Series circuit, will trade-in his racing gloves for floured hands and sourdough bread during a visit to San Francisco's historic Boudin Bakery at Fisherman's Wharf on Monday, July 26, at 11 a.m. PT.
Wheldon, accompanied by the wives of two National Guard military members serving overseas, will work with Boudin master baker Fernando Padilla to re-create Wheldon's No. 4 National Guard IndyCar out of San Francisco's world-famous sourdough. The bread will then be shipped to a National Guard unit serving overseas, along with a care package from Boudin Bakery.
Wheldon will be in San Francisco to promote the upcoming Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma at Infineon Raceway, Aug. 20-22.
Boudin Bakery is located at Fisherman’s Wharf, 160 Jefferson St., San Francisco, www.boudinbakery.com, (415) 351-5561. Parking is available in an adjacent lot.
· Dan Wheldon (National Guard): Wheldon, ninth in IZOD IndyCar Series points standings, has posted six top-10 finishes this season, including a second-place finish at the Indianapolis 500. Wheldon won the Indianapolis 500, as well as the IZOD IndyCar Series championship, in 2005.
Fernando Padilla: Since apprenticing with former Boudin owner "Papa Steve" Giraudo at 17, Padilla has preserved Boudin's breadmaking traditions for 28 years. Padilla leads a team of 38 bakers at two locations.
