Brookshire Grocery Co., facing pressures from competitors and a sluggish economy, will lay off 85 workers and close its bakery plant in the next 30 to 60 days.
A statement from the company says, “Due to significant competitive pressure combined with unfavorable economic conditions, Brookshire Grocery Company has announced a reduction in workforce affecting approximately 85 employees.”
Spokeswoman Ellen Reynolds said there will be no impact to the company’s approximately 14,400-plus employees in retail and other support functions. She added affected employees will receive severance and transition assistance.”
