5 Generation Bakers Leader Honored At Pittsburgh Smart 50 Awards

PITTSBURGH, PA – Smart Business magazine has recognized the Pittsburgh region’s three top executives for innovation, impact and sustainability with its third annual Smart 50 Awards.

“The top honorees in these select categories are visionary leaders in the region who have energy and passion, taking innovation to the next level and are truly making a difference in the community,” said Dustin S. Klein, publisher of Smart Business, a publisher of 14 regional business publications including Smart Business Pittsburgh. “They have gone above and beyond what it takes to effectively build and lead successful organizations that have a strong impact on the community and the greater region.”

Steven Massaro, senior vice president of Massaro Construction Management Services LLC, earned the Innovation award. The Innovation category honors an organization for developing and commercializing new products, services and solutions. Steven and the Massaro team implemented a unique constructability review matrix, based on proprietary software they developed, to assist in the building process by creating viable metrics to help bring projects to completion on time and under budget.

John Manzetti, president and CEO of Pittsburgh Life Sciences Greenhouse, earned the Impact award. The Impact award honors an organization whose products, services and solutions benefit the organization, its employees, investors and others in categories ranging from sales and expansion to giving back to the community. Under John’s direction, Pittsburgh Life Sciences Greenhouse has put a spotlight on Pittsburgh as a health care hub. With investments in excess of $21 million, PLSG has impacted 443 life sciences companies in and around Pittsburgh, helping to create or retain more than 2,300 direct jobs and indirectly affecting an additional 14,000 jobs.

Scott Baker, president of 5 Generation Bakers was honored for Sustainability. The Sustainability award honors an organization whose combination of innovation and impact lead to a sustainable, scalable business that develops and fosters community. To preserve his family’s 100+ year legacy and their ties to the community, Scott has redeveloped property in McKees Rocks to quadruple production capabilities and the size of his staff. Additionally, 400 square feet of the new facility will provide the community, especially the elderly without transportation, with a fresh food market, helping to feed people on supplemental programs for the needy.

The ceremony was held Nov. 10 at the Fairmont Pittsburgh Hotel.
