A former executive of department store chain Sears and most recently at A&P supermarkets has taken the reins as chairman, chief executive and president of Marsh Supermarkets.

The Indianapolis-based grocer said Thursday that Thomas R. O'Boyle Jr. was named to the post, after more than a year filled with CEO turnover.

Former CEO Joe Kelley left the company in May 2011 to become president of the New England division of Stop & Shop, a 375-store grocery chain.

He replaced Frank Lazaran, who left Marsh in April 2011 after serving as CEO for five years, during which he led the remodeling of stores and the implementation of a more value-oriented strategy.
