DURHAM – The bulk of Ninth Street Bakery’s business is in wholesale, providing breads and pastries to grocery stores, caterers and other businesses.

But with the recent rise in activity downtown, Frank Ferrell, bakery co-owner and founder, said he’s looking to add to the offerings of the bakery’s café side that he said had previously languished for years.

They’ve already added a bar, lengthened their hours, and expanded their menu to draw in customers, and now they want to raise around $30,000 to build a deck so they can increase their seating capacity and visibility, and to allow for more special events.

“Retail opportunities are better than they were in 1992 downtown,” he said, speaking of the year when the bakery moved its production operation downtown from Ninth Street. “I would say it really started ramping up about (the last) two years,” he added.
