Shatto Milk Company’s Farmstead Cheeses are quickly making a name for themselves after the local family farm completed its state of the art cheese making facility earlier this year. On Saturday, August 13th, Shatto Milk Company was notified that their “Lily” cheese was named Best of Show at the Missouri State Fair. Lily is an aged cheddar cheese named after a town near the family dairy farm. All other State Fair awards will be announced soon.
Annually the State Fair holds a product judging contest. Products are submitted from across the country, with most submittals coming from the State of Missouri. The Best of Show award is given to the one product that outshined all others.
“We are humbled by such an award as it is amazing to think that our Lily Cheese was graded above all other products in the competition. We never thought our cheeses would be amongst the best within such a short period of time.” Said the Shatto Family. “It is our cows that deserve the credit as we truly believe good cheese is only possible with outstanding milk.” Shatto Milk products have received many international awards including just this past Friday, August 5th when, Shatto Milk Company’s “Plattsburg” cheese was named third in the Farmstead Cheese Class – Open Category Cows Milk Cheeses (aged over 60 days) during the 27th Annual American Cheese Society Conference and Competition. Over the past 12 months Shatto Root Beer Milk received 1st place, strawberry milk 2nd place and their 2% white milk 2nd place at the World Dairy Exposition, which is held annually in Madison, Wisconsin. The competition brings in products from around the world.
Shatto Milk Company has been making cheese for just over two years, focusing on a variety of aged cheese as well cheese curds. Fresh cheese curds are available for both retail and wholesale purchase; the aged cheeses are available as the aging process has been completed which varies based upon type, make date and overarching desired flavor notes.
Shatto Milk Company is a small family dairy farm located 30 miles north of Kansas City. They began bottling their world famous milk on the farm in June 2003, and just opened their cheese making facility on the farm in March of this year. They currently make cheese curds as well as a variety of aged farmstead cheeses that are available for sale at the farm as well as at select grocery stores in the Kansas City and St. Joseph areas.
