Washington, D.C. – The North American Meat Institute (NAMI) Scholarship Foundation will offer larger awards to students in 2017-2018. Winners will receive $5,000 each, an increase from $3,000 in 2016-2017. Last year nine awards were given to high-performing undergraduate students to pursue degrees in animal, meat and food science, or in a culinary arts program.
In addition, the Scholarship Foundation Board of Directors recently voted to allow past recipients to be eligible for additional scholarships if they qualify. Previously, awardees were permitted one scholarship.
“As the cost of education rises, we want to offer awards that help students pursue careers in the meat and poultry industry,” said Ron Gustafson, NAMI Scholarship Foundation president. “The student winners are the future leaders of our industry.”
The NAMI Scholarship Foundation is also launching a new online application for students. The new system should streamline the application process and make it easier for prospective students to apply and the selection committee to review the applications. Applicants can apply online at www.meatscholars.org. The deadline for applications is May 30, 2017.
Each year, the NAMI Scholarship Foundation awards scholarships to eligible sophomores, juniors and seniors attending accredited four-year colleges or universities who are enrolled in an approved animal, meat or food science degree or culinary arts program. Award recipients must remain in good academic standing and maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale.
The NAMI Scholarship Foundation is supported by Institute members and industry allies. Donations, which are tax deductible, may be sent to NAMI Scholarship Foundation, Attn: Rosemary Mucklow, 1150 Connecticut Ave, 12th Floor, Washington DC 20036.
