Sparks, NV – The NuValTM Nutritional Scoring System is now available at all Scolari’s Food & Drug stores, an independent food store chain with 18 stores in California and Nevada.

The NuVal Nutritional Scoring System is a guide designed to enhance the shopping experience. All store items receive a NuVal score from 1 to 100; the higher the score, the better the nutrition. Scores are posted on supermarket shelves and signs throughout the store, making it easy for consumers to compare the overall nutrition of the foods they buy at a glance.

“With the large amount of nutrition information on food packaging and television advertising from food manufactures, it can become overwhelming”, said Joey Scolari, Chief Executive Officer for Scolari’s. “The NuVal system answers a simple question in an instant: ‘What are the most nutritional options on the shelves for my family?’”

With this launch, the NuVal Nutritional Scoring System is now in 25 states across the country. The Scolari’s launch marks the first stores to adopt the system in Nevada and California. Through this partnership, NuVal LLC and Scolari’s will help communities learn how to live better, more nutritious life styles. NuVal Scores are currently available in more than 1,050 stores across 25 states in chains such as Price Chopper, Hy-Vee, Meijer, and United supermarkets, among others, with more chains expected to launch later this year.

The first Scolari’s grocery store opened in 1947 and quickly grew to a dozen stores. Through different acquisitions and name changes, Scolari’s Food & Drug became known for offering consumers a wide range of store formats and excellent customer service.

Using the NuVal Nutritional Scoring System, Scolari’s’ customers will:

  • Easily discover the more nutritious products in a store. Consumers wanting to know what cereals (or crackers or cookies) have more nutrition only need to take a look at the NuValTMScores and choose the higher number.
  • Be able to “act like an expert,” using the knowledge and research of more than a dozen of the country’s best nutrition experts, who spent two years creating the ONQI (Overall Nutritional Quality Index), the scientific engine used to determine NuValTMScores.
  • Get more nutrition for their budget, as they can now compare items side-to-side and determine which product offers the better value, not just in price, but in nutrition as well. For instance, consumers may find that some varieties of frozen or canned vegetables score the same as fresh produce on the NuValTMScale.
  • Be able to better compare name brand to store brand products. In many instances, consumers will learn that a store’s private label item is just as nutritious as the more expensive national one.

Scolari’s’ customers can look for scores with the NuVal System’s trademark blue hexagons on shelf tags throughout the store. NuVal Scores are calculated for a wide variety of categories, including meat, seafood, poultry, salty snacks, milk, yogurt, vegetables (fresh, frozen and canned), cereal, bread, cookies, soft drinks, and crackers, among others. Ultimately, the NuVal System will guide U.S. consumers in all food categories with no influence from food manufacturers.
