OXFORD, N.C. – Bailey Farms, the leading family-operated U.S. grower-shipper of specialty peppers, spiced things up locally when it awarded a winner willing to brave the heat for a cash prize at this year’s North Carolina Hot Sauce Festival on Sept. 10.
William Smith won the event as he and other contestants battled their way through 11 rounds, facing off with a few of the grower-shipper’s hottest chile peppers including Jalapeños, Habaneros, Ghost and Carolina Reapers. Mr. Smith received a cash prize of $1,000 for first place.
“Bailey Farms is a big part of the annual North Carolina contest and festival,” says Randy Bailey, owner, president and co-founder of Bailey Farms. “This year marks eight years of hosting the annual hot sauce competition. It is a big part of our community and we couldn’t be happier about this year’s turnout.”
Bailey Farms donated all proceeds from this year’s contest entry fees to the Brain Tumor Alliance. The charity, formerly known as Miles for Hope, is one that hits close to home for the company.
“We believe in using business to do good in the world,” says Tony Terry, sales director at Bailey Farms. “This event grants us an opportunity to help many people we know who’ve been affected by this disease.”
The 10th annual festival was free to the public and featured all things North Carolina including the state’s finest hot sauces and barbecue sauces along with craft beers and wine. Bailey Farms is a major sponsor of the event that attracted over 15,000 attendees this year to downtown Oxford.
