When shoppers at the Windsor Heights Hy-Vee Food Store check the nutrition labels in the meat case, they can be in for a surprise: One type of skinless chicken breast can have three times as much sodium as another.

A year from now, that kind of nutrition information on fresh cuts of beef, pork and poultry will be available to shoppers nationwide. The U.S. Department of Agriculture will require nutrition labeling for the most popular cuts of meat.

"People think chicken is chicken. They don't realize they're getting more sodium and fat" in some products than in others, said Lynn Swinger, a dietitian who advises shoppers at the Windsor Heights store.
