Giant Eagle claims in a federal lawsuit filed Friday that an egg producer cooperative has engaged in price fixing.

The O'Hara-based grocery chain claims in the lawsuit that United Egg Producers, United Egg Association, United States Egg Marketers and 18 individual companies conspired to reduce the number of laying hens in the United States so that they could reduce egg production and keep egg prices artificially high.

Giant Eagle bought about $69 million worth of eggs between 2006 and 2009, the lawsuit says. The lawsuit says United Egg Association and United States Egg Marketers are part of United Egg Producers, which represents companies that own about 95 percent of the egg-laying hens in the country, according to the organization's website.
