HADLEY – ALDI Inc., a food store that began with stores in southeastern Iowa in 1976, is opening today here on land near Home Depot.

The company has a store in Springfield as well.

"The store has a less is-more approach to grocery retailing. Everything we do, from selecting suppliers to scouting locations to building and operating stores, facilitates savings substantial enough to impact your every-day living," according to the Web site.

Spokeswoman Heather Tarczan said ALDI is interested in expanding and is always looking for new communities to build in. She said the store is unlike other markets because it doesn't sell in bulk, offers limited brand choices and doesn't take credit cards.

The store here, as is typical, is 10,000 square feet of market space but the building is 17,000 square feet. It sells a little more than 1,400 of the most commonly purchased items, from produce and meats and to frozen foods. She said it doesn't have a deli or bakery but does sell those products pre-packaged. She said about 95 of what is sold is "under the ALDI select brand." She said shoppers are able to buy about 90 percent of what's on their list.
