San Francisco, CA – Genuine Grub, a San Francisco based maker of premium natural ferments, officially launched its exciting, new Turmeric Pickled Radish earlier this month. This, on the heels of introducing it at the annual Winter Fancy Food Show hosted by the Specialty Food Association.
“Based upon the response at the Winter Fancy Food Show last month, I think this product is going to be a game changer,” says founder, Dan Fruin. “Obviously, turmeric is one of the buzz ingredients of 2016, but the healing properties of turmeric – as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory – is unquestioned.”
As more products containing turmeric hit the market, what sets Genuine Grub apart from its’ competitors, however, is their use of fresh turmeric versus ground. Asked about the benefit of using fresh turmeric, Fruin states: “First, using fresh guarantees potency. With ground, you don’t know how long it’s been sitting around. Second, fresh turmeric doesn’t have the same, strong, bitter aftertaste that ground turmeric can have. Lastly, fresh turmeric is vibrantly yellow/orange, which, with ground, gets lost as it turns darker due to the oxidation process.”
Asked then why competitors don’t use fresh turmeric, Fruin interjects: “Probably because it’s a pain in the butt to peel. Most [turmeric roots] are the size of a baby carrot, so picture having to hand peel 5 – 10 lbs. worth at a time. It’s definitely a time suck. But, it’s also a huge value proposition that I choose to provide to customers.”
So, what does it taste like? According to Fruin, “You know that sickly-sweet, fluorescent yellow pickled radish you find at sushi restaurants? It’s kind of like that, only much richer in flavor, but without the sugar, without the dye – and, obviously, healthier – given that this product is naturally fermented (non-vinegar based), you get the probiotics and the tremendous healing properties from the turmeric, garlic and ginger.”
As for what to pair it with, Fruin suggests eggs, sandwiches, bbq pulled pork, fried rice – even coconut soup. Fruin adds, “It’s pretty flexible, so the possibilities are endless. You can even eat it straight out of the jar – it’s that good.”
Ingredients: radish, apple, green onion, garlic, fresh turmeric, sea salt, ginger.
Currently available at: AJ’s Market, Andronico’s, Belcampo Meat Co., The Food Bin, Foothill Produce, Gene’s Fine Foods, Gus’s Market, Oceana Market and other natural / specialty grocery retailers throughout the SFO Bay Area.
