FirstFruits Marketing’s sixth annual Take a Bite Out of Hunger program is underway in retailers across the country. The program’s goal is to help feed the underserved and bring attention to the problem of food insecurity in the United States. As of 2014, 14 percent of all U.S. households were food-insecure according to the USDA. Of those, households with children reported food insecurity at a higher rate than those without children: 19 percent compared to 12 percent.
Approximately 1 million pounds of fresh apples have been donated to local food banks since the program’s inception in 2010. Last year over 250,000 pounds of fresh apples were donated in participating retailers’ names to local food banks in their communities.
“This program continues to grow each year,” said Dennis Jackson, category manager of FirstFruits Marketing. “We are pleased to work with our retail partners to make these donations possible in their local communities and feedback from the food banks has been overwhelmingly appreciative.”
Retailers participating in the program this year include Dave’s Marketplace, Roundy’s, United Supermarkets, Ahold, Harveys, Charlie’s Produce and Stater Brothers.
The Take a Bite Out of Hunger program provides full retail support with campaign-themed polybags and merchandisers, point of sale cards and ad slicks. At the conclusion of the program, local press is invited to attend food bank donations.
