Gateway Market, the organic and gourmet grocery store perched on the edge of downtown Des Moines, has become the David to several Goliaths during its first 10 years.

It’s emerged from each battle a little stronger and a little smarter, said Paul Rottenberg, one of Gateway’s owners and president of Orchestrate Hospitality, the Des Moines umbrella that also operates area restaurants Zombie Burger, Centro, South Union Bakery, Malo and Django.

The grocery industry — ranging from major players like Wal-Mart, Costco, Target and Hy-Vee Inc. to regional chains like Fareway to specialty markets like Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Aldi and Campbell’s Nutrition — are all vying for food dollars as shoppers look for value, convenience and selection.
