UTICA — In the 14 months since it opened, Utica Bread’s wholesale business has risen sharply, thanks to the area’s growing need for quality, local bread.

“When we opened Utica Bread, our intention was to get high quality, European-style bread into our local marketplace," said Tim Hardiman, who co-owns the bakery and the restaurant, both on Bagg’s Square West, with wife Melissa and Chris and Tracey Talgo. "We knew from operating The Tailor and The Cook that there was a gap in the marketplace as far as getting good, crusty European-style bread."

The area’s hunger for that bread fuels the weekly sale of 1,300 baguettes now, not to mention the other kinds of breads and pastries the bakery sells.
