NORTHPORT – Five dollars per pound for canners and 50 cents more for markets. That’s what lobster fishermen were reported to be getting for their catches Thursday in Northport, near Alberton.

Considering boats only hit the water on May 8 last year due to ice, compared to April 30 this year, overall landings are well ahead of this time last season, but daily catches are described as lighter. “They’ll come around,” predicted David Lewis, Northport representative on the Western Gulf lobster advisory committee.

The fact that he has not been hearing much concern from fellow fishermen tells him they expect catches to improve once the water temperature rises.
