USDA Farmers Market Opens for 27th Market Season

The USDA Farmers Market also promotes the consumption of healthy fresh produce and other vegetable products through its unique educational program, VegU. The education program uses short educational sessions and live recipe demonstrations to show how to incorporate a variety of fruits and vegetables into meals. The Farmers Market welcomes participants of USDA’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and accepts SNAP/EBT payments.

South American Meat Inc. Recalls Frozen Raw Beef Products Imported Without Benefit of Import Reinspection

South American Meat Inc., also known as 5Gogi LLC, an importer located in Commerce, Calif., is recalling approximately 20,111 pounds of various eligible frozen raw beef products that were not presented to FSIS for import reinspection upon entry into the United States, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).

USDA Proposes Next Steps to Promote Fairer Poultry Markets, Protect Producers, and Enhance Transparency

USDA is proposing the rule Poultry Grower Payment Systems and Capital Improvement Systems, to address a range of abuses that have occurred in relation to grower ranking (commonly known as “tournament”) payment systems and additional capital investment requirements that poultry companies commonly ask of their contract growers for broiler chicken. This rule is the third in a suite of Packers and Stockyards Act rules that USDA has undertaken to create fairer markets, which ultimately can lead to lower grocery prices for hardworking families.

Independent Grocer Testifies Before Congress on Protecting SNAP Choice

Michael Gay, owner and single-store operator of Food Fresh in rural Evans County, Ga., testified before Congress, warning that limiting SNAP choice would undermine the program’s effectiveness, create confusion for participants, and impose a costly bureaucratic burden on small businesses nationwide.

Peanut Industry Votes to Continue Research and Promotion Program

In the referendum held April 8-19, 2024, 93.23% of peanut producers voted in favor of continuing the program. This meets the requirement that a simple majority vote in favor of the program for it to continue. Peanut producers who were subject to assessments Jan. 1, 2022, through Dec. 31, 2022, were eligible to vote in the referendum.
