Trade Wars & the Dinner Table: Which Foods Are Most Vulnerable to Import Tariffs?

Donald Trump’s recent plan to impose a 25% tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada, along with an additional 10% tariff on goods from China, could have significant consequences for U.S. consumers. Together, these three countries supply nearly half (45%) of all U.S. food and beverage imports, making everyday staples more vulnerable to rising prices.

States Most Impacted by Food Recalls in Recent Years

Over the past few years, the number of food recalls issued by the two agencies has increased. From 2020 to 2023, the total number of recalls grew from 454 to 547, an increase of more than 20%. This growth took place across all classes of recall, but notably the number of Class I recalls has increased in each year since 2020. And through the first half of 2024, the number of total recalls is set to roughly match 2023’s total.

Trace One Reports: Grocery Store Items That Have Increased Most in Price

Groceries account for the largest share of individual spending in a number of states where income is relatively low, or where grocery prices are especially high. However, even in regions where grocery spending constitutes a smaller portion of income, consumers still find themselves grappling with significant weekly food bills. In 37 states, consumers report weekly household grocery expenditures exceeding $250 on average.
