New FDA Traceability Requirements to Take Effect in January 2026, Will Cover Shrimp

On Tuesday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a pre-publication version of a Federal Register notice setting forth the final traceability requirements to be imposed on products covered by the agency’s Food Traceability List. The final rule is scheduled to be formally published in the Federal Register on Monday, November 21st and the FDA has announced that the compliance date for the traceability requirements will be January 20, 2026.

On Friday, the five Commissioners currently sitting on the U.S. International Trade Commission (“Commission”) voted unanimously that the submissions by the U.S. domestic shrimp industry in response to the notice of institution of the third sunset reviews of the antidumping duty orders on certain frozen warmwater shrimp from China, India, Thailand, and Vietnam were “adequate,” meaning that they had met the statutory and regulatory requirements to justify a full review of the trade relief.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published detailed data regarding 107 total seafood entry line refusals in April, of which eight (7.5%) were of shrimp for reasons related to banned antibiotics.  

New Scholarship to Support Students with Ties to US Shrimp Industry

In 2022, SSA will award post-secondary educational scholarships to two students in each of the eight states where the southeastern shrimp industry operates (Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina). The sixteen recipients will receive up to $1,000 towards an area of study of their choice at any post-secondary institution, including trade and vocational schools.

Global efforts to advance fishery conservation and to combat IUU fishing and the use of forced and child labor in the seafood supply chain took a major step forward yesterday when the House Committee on Natural Resources passed by a voice-vote, HR 3075: the Illegal Fishing and Forced Labor Prevention Act. The bipartisan bill was introduced on May 11, 2021, by Congressman Jared Huffman (D-CA) and Congressman Garret Graves (R-LA).
