IDFA Applauds FDA Decision to Approve First-Ever Qualified Health Claim for Yogurt, Linking Yogurt to a Reduced Risk of Type 2 Diabetes

The International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA) is pleased with the decision published today by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to approve the first-ever qualified health claim for yogurt, recognizing a potential link between its regular consumption and a reduced risk of type-2 diabetes. The FDA’s decision came in response to a petition submitted by Danone North America. The new claim is available for all yogurt makers.

IDFA’s Healthy School Milk Commitment is a pledge by 37 school milk processors representing approximately 95% of the school milk volume in the United States to provide healthy, nutritious school milk options with no more than 10 grams of added sugar per 8 fluid ounce

IDFA believes the dairy industry has fundamentally changed since 2008 when the previous FMMO revisions were made, and that the current FMMO pricing formulas should be amended to reflect these new market dynamics. 89% of Parents Want Whole and 2% Milk Options Reinstated in School Meals

For 12 years, students in U.S. public schools have not been able to access the milk options that they prefer and consume at home: whole and reduced-fat (2%) milk. As the U.S. Senate considers the Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act of 2023—bipartisan legislation to reinstate these nutritious milk options in school meals—a new Morning Consult poll of parents with children in public shows near unanimous support for the bill.
