With the whole world’s attention pivoting to Europe and with preparations underway to re-launch the post-pandemic version of The London Produce Show and Conference in full swing, we remembered that at the last version of the show, Freshfel held its in annual event in conjunction with The London Produce Show and Conference.  As we prepare for the event this year, we wanted to update some of the priorities Freshfel is emphasizing now.

World Apple And Pear Association (WAPA) Presents Annual Southern Hemisphere Crop Forecast

On the occasion of its Annual General Meeting, the World Apple and Pear Association (WAPA) has released the Southern Hemisphere apple and pear crop forecast for the upcoming season. According to the forecast, which consolidates the data from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Chile, New Zealand, and South Africa, apple and pear production is estimated to decrease by 7% and 6% respectively in 2022 compared to the previous year.

Freshfel Europe Calls for EU Actions on Fresh Produce to Cope With Belarus Embargo

In a letter to the European Commission on 4 February, Freshfel Europe summed up its concerns on the mulitples consequences for fresh produce of the Belarus embargo. The Association urged the EU authorities to take  steps to support the sector in this new trade restriction The sector  is one more time the bargaining chips of geopolitical dispute. The Belarus embargo is  affecting close to half a million T of EU export adding up on the impact of other not yet recovered embargoes. These trade restrictions represent annually disruptive market worth 3 billion €.

Eurostat released a report indicating that only 12% of Europeans over the age of 15 are eating at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables per day. This finding is coherent with the conclusions of the Freshfel Europe Consumption Monitor released on 16th December 2021, indicating that average EU fruit and vegetable consumption stands at  around 350 gr/capita/da
