The California Strawberry Commission recently partnered with the Santa Maria Valley Chamber of Commerce for the Annual Strawberry Industry Recognition Dinner held on April 19, 2024, at the Santa Maria Fairpark. This annual event brings together the Santa Maria Valley agriculture industry to celebrate and honor the people behind growing one of the area’s key commodities, strawberries.

To demonstrate its commitment to farming better, the California Strawberry Commission recently launched California Strawberries: Growing a Sustainable Future, a snapshot of innovative, sustainable farming practices and research being implemented throughout the industry that benefit the land, people and communities and makes growing 90% of the nation’s strawberries possible. 

California Strawberry Industry Applauds Executive Order to Address Historical Flooding in Growing Regions

Earlier this month, California governor Gavin Newsom signed an executive order to expedite critical work like levee repairs and debris removal to help protect and prepare local communities in anticipation of another possible wet season. This past March, the Pajaro and Salinas Rivers saw record rainfall, leading to historic flooding and levee failure in the region. The flooding affected nearly five percent of farms in the area with millions in crop, property and equipment damage.

The Latest in Strawberry Farming Research and Innovation Displayed at Cal Poly Strawberry Center Field Day 

Nearly 500 strawberry growers, shippers, processors, researchers and agricultural stakeholders gathered on August 3 for the seventh annual Cal Poly Strawberry Center Field Day, the largest research and education event for the California strawberry industry. The event showcased the latest in innovative strawberry farming technology and research to better combat challenges faced by strawberry growers.
