For years now, the state of Maryland has been promoting restaurants that buy and sell Maryland crab meat. The “True Blue” program is the state’s guarantee that the crab dip you buy as an appetizer was made with crab meat taken from Maryland waters, in an effort to support the men and women who work in the state’s seafood industry.

Virginia’s Blue Crab Commercial Harvest Period Extended

The Virginia Marine Resources Commission voted last week to approve the extension recommended by the Crab Management Advisory Committee. The harvest of crabs by hard crab pot is now Dec. 16, pushed back from Nov. 30. Lower bushel limits will begin Nov. 1 instead of Oct. 1.

Pontchartrain Blue Crab Recognized for Ten Year Commitment to Fisheries Sustainability

The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) announced Pontchartrain Blue Crab as a 2022 MSC US Ocean Champion Award winner for their ten year commitment to MSC certification, and continued dedication to ocean health above and beyond the requirements of the MSC sustainability standards. The fishery was first certified in 2012 and celebrated its ten year certification anniversary in 2022.

Marine Fisheries Reminds Public of Blue Crab Harvest Closure

The N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries is reminding the public of the annual blue crab harvest closures. The harvest closure period runs from Jan. 1, 2023 through Jan. 31, 2023, for North Carolina state waters north and east of the Highway 58 bridge over Bogue Sound to Emerald Isle and from March 1, 2023 through March 15, 2023, for North Carolina state waters south and west of the Highway 58 bridge.

Blue Crab Population In Chesapeake Bay Hits Record Low

The number of blue crabs in the Chesapeake Bay hit a record low, marking the lowest count in more than three decades of tracking the crustaceans, experts said.
