Slowly and in its characteristically enigmatic way, the Chesapeake Bay blue crab is showing signs of a rebound after a harsh winter decimated its numbers.
“From what we’re hearing, the season started off really really slow, but it’s starting to pick up,” said Brenda Davis, blue crab program manager for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.
The season opened April 1, but crabs didn’t start tugging trot lines or filling crab pots in meaningful numbers until well into May, Davis said. Some crabbers say they had to wait until the end of June or early July for the crabs to return in force.
