NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) Virginia regulators are considering recommendations extending catch restrictions on the Chesapeake Bay's blue crab.
The Virginia Marine Resources Commission is scheduled to consider the staff recommendations Tuesday at a meeting in Newport News. The meeting is the first since an annual count found more blue crabs in the bay than at any time since 1997.
Commission staff is recommending the continuation of two key restrictions. They are a continued ban on the winter dredge, which scoops up hibernating females that gather at the bay's opening, and a moratorium on issuing new crabbing licenses.
