Unusually Short Mississippi Oyster Season Worries Seafood Dealers

PASS CHRISTIAN, MS – Just five days after opening, the Mississippi oyster season is pretty much over. The season got off to a disappointing start Monday. Now, all areas opened to tonging will close at 3:00 p.m. Saturday.

The short season is hurting more than just the people who work the waters. This is the time of year, when the Pass Christian Harbor is bustling with oyster fishermen unloading their catch and customers buying them fresh off the boat. But on Friday, the docks were unusually quiet, the equipment was at a standstill, and the sacks were empty.

"I've never seen it this bad like the way it is," said Darlene Kimball.

Kimball is a long-time seafood dealer in the Pass. About 90 percent of her income comes from oysters. She's used to getting as many as 1,500 sacks a day, but not this year.
