SURRY, Maine — Shellfish farmer Joe Porada has been trying for years to get the okay to grow oysters in Morgan Bay in Surry. He's moving forward despite strong objections from neighboring property owners.
Many people living along the bay say the farm will ruin their waterfront views and obstruct boating and swimming. They tried to get the state Department of Marine Resources to deny Porada's lease but weren't successful.
This month, the agency gave Porada the okay to get started and he plans to do that this week. It involves putting tens of thousands of juvenile oysters into the water to grow .
