MUKILTEO, Wash. — Today, Starfishs all-natural gluten-free battered halibut was featured on Good Morning America Now, part of the ABC News Now network, getting high praise and a score of 92 out of 100, including a 30 out of 30 for taste, from the Supermarket Guru Phil Lempert.
Our goal was to provide quality products that are healthy and taste good.
Lempert commended the gluten-free fish for being a domestic product with no preservatives or additives, for quality of taste and for going gluten-free in an intelligent way.
Starfish introduced its line of all-natural and gluten-free crispy battered wild harvested seafood products in 2008. The company expanded its popular crispy battered line of wild fish to include gluten-free versions of its halibut, cod and haddock offerings, providing the same quality, flavor and value, without scrimping on taste. Starfishs gluten-free crispy battered products are available in both local independent and national retail grocers, such as Whole Foods.
Starfish, a subsidiary of Pacific Seafood Group based in Mukilteo, Wash., expanded its product line due to an increasing consumer demand for gluten-free products. Millions of Americans have celiac disease and as a result cannot eat gluten, a generic name for certain types of insoluble proteins contained in common cereal grains such as wheat, barley, rye and other derivatives. Many believe a gluten-free diet can help relieve symptoms on various ailments including chronic intestinal complaints and in the treatment of autism, schizophrenia, chronic fatigue, multiple sclerosis, attention deficit disorder, migraine and fertility problems.
We saw a lack of quality gluten-free offerings in the seafood category more than three years ago, and began to develop a gluten-free batter for those with celiac disease, said Bob OBryant, Starfish general manager. Our goal was to provide quality products that are healthy and taste good.
The response from consumers has been enthusiastic, with many Starfish consumers preferring the gluten-free Starfish crispy battered products to the conventional wheat-based batters.
Starfish is owned by Pacific Seafood, a family-owned seafood company based in Portland, Ore. Performing all operations from dock to dinner table, Pacific Seafood processes West Coast products from Alaska to Mexico and owns and operates distribution facilities throughout Washington, Oregon, California, Texas, Arizona, Nevada and Utah.
