That means the 2017 scallop season for Gulf County remains on hold, with the end of the statewide season rapidly approaching within a month.
The numbers have gone lower, just not low enough.
Testing last week for contamination in scallops from a naturally-occuring algae bloom in St. Joseph Bay showed that the numbers are improving, but contamination levels remain, “above levels safe for human consumption,” said Amanda Nalley, spokeswoman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission.
