South Carolina Shrimpers Sail On Despite Rising Costs, Threats From Imported Seafood

For nearly 70 years, the Gay family has trawled for and sold local shrimp at its St. Helena Island market.

But these days, they often make more money selling t-shirts and coffee mugs than seafood.

Charles Gay, co-owner of Gay Fish Co., is pictured in this photo taken in August holding a shrimp affected with a parasite infection called black gill. Gay thinks shrimping in Beaufort County will eventually come to an end because of shrimp farms in foreign markets.
