Shellfish Poisoning Hits Fifth Alaskan

ALASKA — A fifth person in Alaska has become sick from paralytic shellfish poisoning, the state Department of Health and Social Services said Monday.

The middle-aged man from Haines ate Dungeness crab on Friday. The crab was caught off Jenkins Rock near the Chilkat Inlet of Lynn Canal, the Department of Health said.

The state did not release the man's name.

While crab meat does not contain the poison, the guts, or viscera, of crab can, health officials said. People should not eat the viscera from crabs, said Department of Health spokesman Greg Wilkinson.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation plans to test crabs from the southeastern area for PSP.
