Seafood Nutrition Partnership Hosts Webinar Series For Dietitians To Showcase Sustainable Seafood For Human Health

ARLINGTON, VA. – Seafood Nutrition Partnership (SNP), the leading 501(c)3 non-profit organization in the U.S. building awareness of the health and nutritional benefits of seafood, will host two webinars during October National Seafood Month to increase awareness of the importance of sustainable seafood for human health. The two educational webinars, generously underwritten by the Walton Family Foundation (WFF), are open to the public but will offer continuing professional education units for registered dietitian nutritionists.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for us to continue to educate RDNs about the importance of sustainable seafood for human health,” said Linda Cornish, president and founder of SNP. “It is important to empower these important and trusted health influencers with the latest information and knowledge they need to recommend sustainable seafood to their patients, and these two webinars will provide a great learning platform for that.”

The first webinar, “A Sea of Change: Understanding What Sustainable Seafood Means Today,” will be held with the Food and Culinary Professionals (FCP) Dietetic Practice Group (DPG) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and take place on Tuesday, October 2, 2018 from 12 noon to 1 p.m. EST. Sustainable seafood is a term that is frequently used in the culinary and retail space. Yet, for most people, there is no clear definition or framework as to what “sustainable” means, making it hard for RDNs to effectively offer guidance. During this webinar, ecology and sustainability expert Tim Fitzgerald of the Environmental Defense Fund will provide an overview of sustainable seafood and tips on how to make recommendations. He will also cover best practices and progress made by major retailers and foodservice on putting in place sustainable seafood policies. After, Barbara Ruhs, RDN, will provide an update on the latest nutrition science for overall health benefits of eating seafood as well as tips on how to talk about sustainable seafood with clients. Click here to register.

The second webinar, “Feeding Your Brain: The Importance of Omega-3s as You Age,” will be held with the Healthy Aging DPG of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and take place on Tuesday, October 9, 2018 from 12 noon to 1 p.m. EST. In this webinar, NIH Acting Section Chief Capt. Joseph Hibbeln, MD, will cover the latest science on seafood and omega-3s for healthy aging, including depression, memory, Alzheimer’s and dementia. After, The MIND Diet author, Maggie Moon, RDN, will offer tips on how to best incorporate sustainable seafood and its vital nutrients into clients’ diets. Click here to register.
