River Fish Kill Deters Seafood Patrons

JACKSONVILLE, FL — The recent fish kill in the St. Johns River is affecting everything from fish, crabs and shrimp to bait and tackle, including hooks and sinkers.

Fish in the river have been floating belly up. Some blame it on pollution, others cite the algae bloom. Regardless, it's making people in the seafood and fishing industries in northeast Florida feel like they're going belly up, too.

"We're not selling the fish or the shrimp. People are scared," said Marvin Nipper, owner of Trout River Fish Co.

Nipper has been running the seafood business for half a century, and he said he's never seen business this bad.
