Small-scale, independent fishermen can capitalize on consumers willing to pay a premium for seafood when they know who caught it, where they caught it and how they caught it, says a new report from the Ecology Action Centre.
The report summarizes the findings of a two-day workshop organized by the centre last fall that brought together fishermen, processors, distributors and chefs.
The report’s five key recommendations for increasing the value of Atlantic Canada’s fisheries are: connecting to targeted markets that are willing to pay a premium for responsibly harvested seafood; building a regional seafood hub using online tools to market and manage premium seafood products; forging new and innovative seafood supply-chain relationships; developing regional branding to highlight the value in Atlantic Canada’s fisheries; and doing a better job of sharing small-scale fisheries success stories with the public and with other fishing communities.
