Prince William Sound Drift Fleet Votes To Continue Tax

JUNEAU, Alaska — The Copper River/Prince William Sound Marketing Association will continue to receive funding from the region’s drift fishermen.

The fleet voted in a 1 percent tax in 2005, and this winter cast ballots on whether to continue that tax.

In 2014, the association received about $545,334 from the drift fleet tax. That money is spent on marketing Copper River salmon and projects to improve fish quality.

According to the state commerce department, which tabulated the votes last week, 165 permit holders voted in favor of continuing the tax, while 97 voted against it. That means about 49 percent of the fleet voted in the referendum.
