Portland State University Study: Oysters Contain Drugs, Other Toxins

PORTLAND, Ore. — A study led by Portland State University researchers found oysters from Coos and Netarts bays contain drugs and other toxins.

The toxins include cocktails of pharmaceuticals, as well as pain relievers, antibiotics, antihistamines, PCBs, mercury and pesticides.

The chemicals enter the bays through groundwater runoff that's discharged to inland rivers and eventually end up in the ocean, the study revealed.
