BIDEFORD — The heart of Prince Edward Island’s public shellfish industry has received an infusion of federal and provincial support.
The Atlantic Canada Opportunity Agency, through its Innovative Communities Fund, contributed $103,171, and the P.E.I. government, through the Department of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development’s Island Community Fund, injected $79,537 to help the P.E.I. Shellfish Association upgrade its infrastructure and buildings.
The association has used some of the funding to purchase 500 new oyster cages for raising juvenile oysters for the enhancement of the public fishery and is using some to upgrade its Ellerslie Shellfish Station buildings where much of its enhancement work is done.
