Oyster Hatchery Could Come To Terrebonne, LA

Terrebonne officials are studying the possibility of bringing a hatchery to the parish to help improve oyster-farming technology and grow shellfish bigger in less time.

BP oil-spill fine money is being made available for hatchery projects, and locals say Terrebonne, which produces more than 25 percent of the state’s oysters, is a perfect location.

“We can expand our markets, get a better-quality product and grow it faster,” said Mike Voisin, owner of Motivatit Seafood oyster company in Houma and a member of the state’s Wildlife and Fisheries Commission.

Terrebonne Economic Development Authority Executive Director Steve Vassallo said his group has long discussed bringing in a fish or oyster hatchery.
